Today, Hawaii Governor David Ige appointed Hilo resident Laura Acasio to replace Senator Kahele in the Hawaii State Senate.

Kahele resigned from the Senate on December 16, 2020, to become a Congressman in Washington D.C.

Acasio is a Hawaii Department of Education substitute teacher who serves in leadership roles within the Democratic Party of Hawaiʻi and in nonprofits such as Ka ʻUmeke Kaʻeo Public Charter School and Hilo Surfrider Foundation.

“I extend a warm welcome to Ms. Acasio and look forward to working with her as the newest member of the Hawaiʻi State Senate,” said Senate President Ronald Kouchi (District 8 – Kauaʻi and Niʻihau).

Acasio will be administered the oath of office on Wednesday, January 20, 2021 at 10 a.m. during the opening day floor proceedings.
