The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Flood Advisory for the Island of Hawaii until 4:15 p.m.

At 1:09 p.m., radar indicated heavy rain over windward Big Island from the Hamakua District to Hilo to Puna. Showers were falling at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour, and additional heavy rainfall is expected through at least the afternoon.

Locations in the advisory include but are not limited to Hilo, Hawaiian Paradise Park, Honokaa, Mountain View, Keaau, Glenwood, Hawaiian Acres, Papaikou, Orchidland Estates, Pepeekeo, Volcano, Honomu, Hakalau, Pahoa, Ninole, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Laupahoehoe, Ookala and Paauilo.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS

  • Stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low lying areas prone to flooding.
  • Rainfall and runoff will also cause hazardous driving conditions due to ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action.
  • Do not cross fast flowing or rising water in your vehicle, or on foot. Turn around, don`t drown.
  • A Flash Flood Watch is also in effect.

This advisory may need to be extended beyond 415 PM HST if flooding persists.
