The National Weather Service in Honolulu has extended the Flood Advisory for the Island of Hawaii until 7:15 p.m.. 

At 4:05 p.m., radar indicated heavy rain over windward Big Island with the heaviest showers falling at rates of 1 to 3 inches per hour over the Hamakua and North Hilo Districts. Additional heavy rainfall is expected through this afternoon and likely tonight. 

Locations in the advisory include but are not limited to Hilo, Hawaiian Paradise Park, Honokaa, Mountain View, Keaau, Glenwood, Hawaiian Acres, Papaikou, Orchidland Estates, Pepeekeo, Volcano, Honomu, Hakalau, Pahoa, Ninole, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Laupahoehoe, Ookala and Paauilo. 

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS

  • Stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low lying areas prone to flooding. 
  • Rainfall and runoff will also cause hazardous driving conditions due to ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action. 
  • Do not cross fast flowing or rising water in your vehicle, or on foot. Turn around, don’t drown. 

A Flash Flood Watch is also in effect.
