Laura Acasio of Hilo announced this evening that she will be running for Senate District 1 (Hilo, Pauka’a, Pāpa’ikou, Pepe’ekeo) in the Hawaiʻi State Senate. Acasio previously served in the Hawaiʻi State Senate after being appointed by Governor Ige in January 2021. She has held various leadership roles within the Democratic Party of Hawaiʻi since 2016 and currently serves on the Hawaiʻi County Environmental Management Commission. Acasio has also been a governing board member for Ka ʻUmeke Kaʻeo Hawaiian Immersion Public Charter School for over eight years.

“I am thrilled to announce my candidacy for Senate District 1,” said Acasio. “As we embark on the journey to head back to the Senate, I am clear on my purpose: to advocate for, be accountable to, and to elevate the diverse voices of our community. We need a strong advocate to show up for our working families with a collaborative and innovative spirit.”

Acasio highlighted a multitude of challenges confronting Senate District 1. “Our community faces critical issues that demand attention and immediate action: housing, cost of living, healthcare, local economic vitality, and public safety. My experience as a legislator has taught me that the solutions to complex challenges are based in hard work, respect, and civic discourse. We need leadership that will listen, engage, and show up for our working families.”

“I look forward to meeting with our constituency in the coming months. Representing this community is a deep honor, and I look forward to connecting with people to talk story about what we can achieve together. It takes all of us,” said Acasio.
