Nestled in the tropical beauty of the Pacific Ocean, Hawaii is often portrayed as a paradise getaway. However, beneath its picture-perfect scenery and tourist attractions lies a growing crisis that tarnishes the state’s image: homelessness. Despite its reputation as a popular tourist destination, Hawaii faces a complex and challenging issue with an alarmingly high rate of homelessness.

According to a recent UHERO Report, Hawai‘i has the fourth-highest homelessness rate in the nation.

“In 2022, Hawai‘i had the fourth-highest share of residents experiencing homelessness. Nationwide, for every 10,000 residents, about 18 were experiencing homelessness. In Hawai‘i, the rate is 41, more than twice the national rate.

According to the best available data, the number of residents experiencing homelessness has been relatively stable in Hawai‘i for the past 15 years.”

Hawaii’s homelessness crisis remains a significant challenge that requires ongoing attention and collaborative efforts. While the state grapples with the complexity of the issue, it is crucial to recognize that homelessness is not an unsolvable problem. By addressing the root causes, increasing access to affordable housing, and providing comprehensive support services, Hawaii can strive towards a future where everyone has a place to call home. Only through sustained commitment and compassion can the islands reclaim their reputation as a true paradise for all who reside within their shores.
