Hele-On announces that effective July 1, 2023, the Mass Transit Agency (MTA) will launch its new Shared Ride Taxi Program. The new program will eliminate the use of taxi coupons and will transition to a cash fare system. There is no limit on the number of miles a rider can travel.

MTA will subsidize up to $15.80 (4 miles) per trip and the balance of the metered fare will be at the rider’s cost, if applicable. Trips outside of the below service hours WILL NOT BE SUBSIDIZED:

Service Hours:

  • Hilo area: Monday through Saturday from 6 a.m to 8 p.m. Sunday and County observed Holidays from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
  • Kailua-Kona area: seven days a week from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Riders must present their Shared Ride identification card while traveling to receive the subsidy. If the rider does not have the card, the rider will not be eligible to receive the $15.80 subsidy and will be required to pay the full metered fare. The Shared Ride identification card is non-transferable and can only be used by the subscriber.
