You might have seen them out along the street today: racers and walkers dressed in pink. These were the survivors of breast cancer and supporters of the 2021 Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. The signature fundraising event for Susan G. Komen, the world’s leading breast cancer organization, was held virtually this year due to ongoing health concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, hundreds of people across the state were uniting in their own neighborhoods to show the power of one community coming together to fund one mission of ending breast cancer forever.

“I am touched and grateful for every single person who took the time to register, donate and walk or run as part of today’s Komen Race For the Cure,” said Rolanda Morgan, Susan G. Komen Hawaii Executive Director. “The power of our community is not about physically being together, it’s about the impact each of us can make when we walk one more step and raise one more dollar. Our Hawaii community has demonstrated their commitment to saving lives and finding a cure for breast cancer and I couldn’t be more proud.”

This year’s event featured a virtual opening ceremony and community scavenger hunt during the walk. Individual teams planned their own festive event and pink-themed attire in a show of support.

Komen Hawaii Race For The Cure will continue to accept donations through November 17, 2021. Funds raised by the community support Komen’s investments in breakthrough research, needed patient care and public policy action at all levels of government.

Susan G. Komen is funding more breast cancer research than any other nonprofit while providing real-time help to those facing the disease. $1.1 billion has been invested collectively in life-saving breast cancer research since 1982.  More than $2.3 billion has been invested to advocate for policies that protect breast cancer patients and to help millions of people across the world understand their disease, access screening and diagnostic exams, and remove barriers to care.

Pending health conditions, Komen intends to host all events in its Race for the Cure in-person in 2022, although ways to participate in the program and connect with the community from your own home or neighborhood will remain for those who prefer that option.
