The Hawaii Fire Department responded to a hiker in distress at Pi’ihonua in Kaumana around 2:08 p.m. on Monday, February 22, 2021.

Upon arrival, firefighters found a 30’s male on the side of the river embankment with a possible hip fracture.

Chopper 1 dropped two Fire Rescue Specialist off near the patient and Chopper 1 with the use of long line recovered the hiker and HFD personnel. All parties safely extricated to landing zone. 

The patient was transported by ambulance to the Hilo Medical Center Emergency Room in stable condition.
