The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Flood Advisory for the Island of Hawaii until 7:30 p.m.

At 4:21 p.m., radar indicated heavy rain over Hilo and Puna districts. Rain was falling at a rate of up to 2 inches per hour. The heaviest rainfall was occurring between Hilo and Pahoa. Additional rain is expected during the next several hours. 

Locations in the advisory include but are not limited to Hilo, Hawaiian Paradise Park, Mountain View, Keaau, Hawaiian Acres, Orchidland Estates, Glenwood, Pahoa, Pepeekeo, Honomu, Hakalau, Laupahoehoe, Fern Acres and Eden Roc. 

  • Stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low lying areas prone to flooding. 
  • Rainfall and runoff will also cause hazardous driving conditions due to ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action. 
  • Do not cross fast flowing or rising water in your vehicle, or on foot. Turn around, don’t drown.
