Hilo Medical Center (HMC) reports that of the 18 patients hospitalized for COVID-19, three are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and 15 are in the COVID Unit. Two deaths were reported at Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home.

Behavioral Health Update (as of 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 30)

After our employee notified us of a positive COVID-19 test result, we immediately tested our patients and staff at the facility on Friday, August 28. As of Sunday, August 30, all patients and staff on the Behavioral Health Unit who were tested are negative. HMC is assessing the possibility of restarting admissions to the unit.

YUKIO OKUTSU STATE VETERANS HOME UPDATE (as of 2 p.m. Sunday Aug. 30, 2020)

HMC reports that 27 residents and 10 employees at Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home have now tested positive for COVID-19. Six are hospitalized at HMC, 19 are cared for at the veteran’s home’s COVID designated area and two deaths related to COVID-19 with significant, underlying health issues. HMC offers their sincerest condolences to the family and loved ones of these veterans who served our country.

The leadership and dedicated staff at the Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home are taking all the appropriate steps to manage and contain this outbreak.
