A semi-conscious 14-year-old boy was rescued from Onomea Bay today by the Hawaii Fire Department.

Situation found at the scene:

Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) units responded to the child who fell in the ocean. Due to the terrain, it was difficult to get situation updates or further details from the reporting party.

Remarks:

Units arrived to find bystanders attempting to assist a semi-conscious 14-year-old male who accidentally fell into the water.

Per bystanders the boy fell in the water and for a time was submerged in the nearshore rocky surf zone.

Bystanders entered the water and helped the boy back to a steep access point along the shoreline embankment.

When HFD arrived, the victim and 2 bystanders were in the water, wedged in a crack at the bottom of the rocky embankment in order to find protection from the waves. HFD Rescue and Fire EMS personnel worked to extricate the boy up the low cliff, then carry him out to the medic, some 1600 feet away via the Onomea Bay Trail.

The boy was treated and transported to Hilo Medical Center. No other injuries were reported on the incident.
