A shark attack has left a man injured at Anaeho’omalu Bay (A-Bay) on the Big Island of Hawaii. The incident occurred when a 60-year-old man was swimming approximately 200 yards offshore and was attacked by an unknown type and size of shark on Sunday, March 19, at 12:42 p.m.

According to reports, the man was able to make it to a nearby catamaran, where the crew on board helped control the bleeding to his upper and lower extremities. The Hawaii Fire Department was immediately notified and dispatched Ski-2 to transport the patient from the catamaran to the beach, where HFD personnel were waiting.

Upon arrival at the beach, the patient was treated for injuries to his left hand and the back of his left leg before being transported to North Hawaii Hospital. The extent of his injuries is not yet known.

Shark attacks are rare in Hawaii, but incidents do occur. Swimmers and surfers are urged to be cautious when in the water, especially during times when sharks are known to be active, such as dawn and dusk. It is also recommended to avoid swimming alone and to stay in groups. Officials have also urged the public to remain vigilant and report any sightings of sharks in the area.

The incident serves as a reminder of the potential danger of swimming in the ocean and the importance of being aware of one’s surroundings while in the water.
