The Makea Stream Bridge reopened on Saturday, Jan. 8, 2022, according to the Department of Public Works Engineering Division.

The Makea Stream Bridge was closed down February 2021 due to the undermining /scour of the bridge abutments sustained from Hurricane lane in 2018. County of Hawai’i alongside Design consultants, Kai Hawaii and Contractor, Isemoto Contracting Co, Ltd were able to complete this steel bridge project in seven months. The approximate cost of temporary bridge is $1.4 million.

The Temporary Bridge project were designed in Milton, Pennsylvania and took about a month to ship to Hilo, Hawai’i. The 80,000 lb structure (including the deck) is made out of hot dipped galvanized steel to ensure the longevity of the structure.

A small ribbon cutting ceremony on January 8, 2022 initiated the use of Makea Stream Bridge. The County appreciates all the hard work done by all involved.
