The Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) responded to a fire at the Laupāhoehoe Point Gym located at 36-1041 Laupāhoehoe Point Road on Thursday, September 16, at 1:18 p.m.

Upon arrival, fire fighters found the plantation era gymnasium, approximately 8,100 square feet, with a smoldering fire on the exterior stairs and floor.

The fire was under control prior to HFD’s arrival by residents with use of a portable fire extinguisher and coolers filled with water.

HPD was on scene prior to HFD and provided information about the fire scene.

The smoldering fire was extinguished and the area was inspected with use of thermal imaging camera.

The scene was left in care with Hawaii Police Department as they continued investigating the area. HFD units were cleared from the scene and returned to quarters.

The cause of the fire at this time is undetermined, as it is still under investigation. The gym had been idle and not in use due to COVID-19 proclamation.

HFD kindly asks that both, residents and visitors alike, call (808) 935-3311 to report any suspicious fire related activities.

NOTE: The newly instated weight limit on Kolekole Bridge’s required the secondary response from Waimea and not Hilo.
