The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Advisory for the Island of Hawaii in Hawaii County until 7:30 a.m.

Advisory: N. Kulani Rd is closed near the Rte 11 intersection due to water crossing the roadway. Use alternate routes.

At 4:24 a.m., Radar indicated heavy rain over the east side of the Big Island. Rain was falling at a rate of 2 to 3 inches per hour. 

Locations in the advisory include but are not limited to Hilo, Volcano, Glenwood, Mountain View, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Hawaiian Acres, Keaau, Orchidland Estates, Pahoa, Papaikou, Pepeekeo, Honomu, Hakalau, Pahala, Laupahoehoe and Punaluu Beach. 

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS

  • Stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low lying areas prone to flooding. 
  • Rainfall and runoff will also cause hazardous driving conditions due to ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action. 
  • Do not cross fast flowing or rising water in your vehicle, or on foot. Turn around, don’t drown.
