A dramatic cliff rescue took place on the Hamakua Coast near Waipio Valley on Monday, March 20, involving multiple emergency response units. According to reports, the Hawaii Fire Department’s Co.8, Chopper 1, Chopper 2, Rescue Co. 2 and the Battalion Chief all responded to a call for help after a 50-year-old man fell off a cliff.

Due to the limited vehicle access and remote location of the scene, there was a delay in accessing the man. When the rescue teams arrived, they found the victim sitting on the ledge of the cliff, approximately 15 feet down from the top, with multiple abrasions and complaining of back pain.

Despite the challenging conditions, the rescue teams worked quickly and efficiently to extricate the man from the cliff. Chopper 1 was used to lift him to Company 8’s ground crew, who then transported him to a Medic 8.

The man was then transported via Medic 8 to Queen’s North Hawaii Community Hospital, where he was treated for his injuries. Thanks to the swift and professional response of the emergency services, the patient was transported without further incident.

This incident serves as a reminder of the bravery and dedication of the emergency services, who put their own lives on the line to help those in need. Despite the challenging conditions, they worked together to ensure the safe rescue of the victim.
